Tiny Car Interior Design Details That Most People Overlook
The cup holder discussion reminded me how many little details exist within cars that most people have overlooked for years.
For instance, I never noticed the arrow next to my dashboard’s fuel icon. Someone then told me it showed where the gas cap is located, and now I look for it every time I get into my car.
Many cars contain hidden features including grocery bag hooks in trunks, little storage compartments underneath seat cushions, and small windshield vents that help decrease window fogging in the front corners of windshields.

Also, some steering wheel designs have slight indentations on either side to support thumbs, and many times we overlook these until we drive a vehicle without them.
Design should blend into the background. This is usually what designers want.
Cup holder gaps fall directly into this category. They aren’t flashy or high-tech, they simply improve functionality in a small way.
So, What Is the True Reason?
The true reason for the gap between car cup holders is essentially functional.
In many cars, it allows drivers to more easily pick up cups, maintain the stability of different-sized cups, and increase flexibility within a compact space. Additionally, some vehicles also use this opening to accommodate mug handles and help reduce interference between cups.
There is no single universal explanation that applies to every car.
Each automotive manufacturer has its own method of designing cup holders based on vehicle layouts and intended uses. This is why cup holder dividers may sometimes appear farther apart, narrower, or larger in some models versus others.
