Because consumers carry huge insulated tumblers, reusable water bottles, iced coffee cups, energy drink cups, and mugs with big handles, designing a single holder shape that accommodates all of them has proven quite difficult.
As a result, cup holders commonly appear asymmetrical or irregularly shaped today.
The primary purpose of both cup holder divider areas and side openings is to create flexibility in a confined space without using additional console space. Automotive manufacturers try to fit various types of beverages into a compact area while still maintaining stability during turns or sudden stops.
My experience has been that well-designed automobiles have features you do not even recognize because everything operates smoothly. A well-designed cup holder keeps beverages secure while allowing drivers to remove a bottle with either hand at a red light without struggling with it.

Several vehicles also include spring-loaded grips or rubber inserts that accommodate a variety of beverage sizes. Many vehicles incorporate textured surfaces along with narrow channels to minimize wobble.
Honestly, oversized water bottles probably drove automotive designers crazy. Nobody talks about this!

Multiple owners shared unconventional uses they have come up with for the slot between cup holders.
Some individuals use the gap as a place to organize charging cables so their cable stays in place while charging a smartphone. Others use it for straw wrappers, parking tickets, receipts, loose coins, or temporary key storage.
I also noticed that several vehicle owners mentioned that using the opening to steady a cup while removing a lid or opening a straw was helpful, especially if the vehicle was moving.
Obviously, these are unofficial uses created by vehicle owners, not official designs provided by automotive engineers or manufacturers for the console.
On the other hand, that’s part of what people love about hidden car interior design features. Users tend to creatively modify little areas in ways designers did not initially consider.
