A flower that turns any home into a little piece of heaven

1. Location Matters

If you find holiday cacti near the cold entrance of a store, resist the temptation and keep looking.

Schlumbergera are native to the tropics and do not tolerate cold well. Exposure to drafts and cold air can cause buds to drop prematurely and even the loss of entire shoots. While these plants can still be purchased, it is unlikely that the buds will survive long enough to bloom.

2. Examine the segments and crown
Cactus plants have branches called cladodes. You can assess the health of the plant by touching it.

Gently squeeze one of the cladodes; it should feel firm. If it feels thin or wrinkled, discard it. This is often a sign of underwatering or root rot.

Also examine the crown where the branches emerge. Look for signs of yellowing at the base or rotting branch tips at the crown. These are clear signs of overwatering.

3. Soil condition is important

Schlumbergera plants in stores are often overwatered. In their natural habitat, these epiphytes thrive in well-draining organic matter. Avoid soil that is waterlogged or shows signs of mold. If your options are limited, choose a submerged plant.

4. Examine the roots

If possible, carefully remove the plant from the pot and inspect its roots. Healthy roots should be white or slightly cream in color. Brown roots indicate root rot.
