Historical Overview:
-
Origins: The institution began in 1908 as Jackson's first hospital when two local doctors opened a small clinic in an eight-room house. In 1911, the Mississippi Baptist Convention took over operations, officially charting it as the Mississippi Baptist Hospital.
-
The Postcard Building: The brick structures in the background of your image were part of a multi-story brick hospital complex that originally opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1914 and expanded significantly with several wings between 1929 and 1956. The modern, light-colored concrete wing featured prominently in the foreground was the Administrative Addition and Chapel, completed in 1964.
-
Demolition: By the late 1960s, the hospital had completely outgrown its footprint. Construction began on a massive new medical tower directly across the street. When the new facility opened in January 1976, this old facility was vacated and was eventually demolished in 1985 to make room for a modern medical arts plaza.
